PERIODONTAL TREATMENT/ TREATMENT FOR DISEASED GUMS:

Gum disease can present with:

1. bleeding gums

2. loose teeth

3. bad breath

4. bad taste

If left untreated it will lead to loss of teeth. Treatment is directed at improving the health of the supporting tissues of the teeth.

The goal of periodontal treatment is to thoroughly clean the pockets around teeth and prevent damage to surrounding bone.

Nonsurgical treatments

If the gum disease isn't advanced, treatment may involve less invasive procedures, including:

• Scaling. Scaling removes tartar and bacteria from your tooth surfaces and beneath your gums. It may be performed using instruments or an ultrasonic device.

• Root planing. Root planing smoothes the root surfaces, discouraging further buildup of tartar and bacteria.

• Localized Drug delivery. This treatment option involves placement of Antibiotic fibres in and around your gums. These fibres are biocompatible. They eliminate the source of infection and improve your gum condition drastically. These antibiotics, because they act locally, do not have any side effects whatsoever.

Surgical treatments

If you have advanced gum disease, your gum tissue may not respond to nonsurgical treatment. In such cases, you may require dental surgery, such as:

Flap surgery (pocket reduction surgery). It is a simple surgical procedure carried out on dental chair itself under local anesthesia. The gum specialist (Periodontist) will slightly reflect the gums from your teeth and remove the underlying infection. By doing this the condition of the gums improves considerably, making your smile healthy.

Soft tissue grafts. When you lose gum tissue to gum disease, your gum-line recedes. You may need to have some of the damaged soft tissue reinforced. This is usually done by removing a small amount of tissue from the roof of your mouth (palate) or another area and placing it on the receded area.

Bone Grafts. This procedure is performed when gum disease has invaded the bone surrounding your tooth. The bone graft is placed in the area and prevents further loss of bone and also regrows the lost bone. The bone graft strengthens the tooth and increases the life span of the tooth.
